New Elevated Deck with a Water Draining System in Wellesley, MA | Tom Curren Companies Skip to main content

Before meeting with Tom Curren Companies, this Wellesley home had an existing rotting deck that the homeowners wanted to transform into a usable space year-round. The existing deck was elevated and jetted off the kitchen and living room, with stairs leading down to the ground level. One common misconception about having an elevated deck is that you can always use the covered portion to entertain in inclement weather – that’s not the case if your deck isn’t properly prepped!

When it rained at this home prior to working with TCC, the area below the deck had water seeping through the slats between decking boards, making it virtually impossible to use during rainy or snowy days. With a large outdoor space like this, making sure it’s practical and usable should be a priority! An important feature we added to this new elevated deck was an under-deck water carrying system that redirects any water and prevents it from immediately dripping down to the lower level. This suggestion from our team was a key factor in this project being a success, adding a tremendous amount of entertaining space for our clients, rain or shine!

To make this space more functional, we completely tore out the existing deck, and rebuilt it from the ground up. We replaced everything – the deck support beams, footings, newel posts, deck boards, and the railings. On the new elevated deck we used Azek composite decking in Slate Gray and stained the Mahogany horizontal slat railing. The main deck and stairs were built with an “over the rail” guard system using solid Mahogany 2×6 top rail and 3/4” x 2” horizontal slats for the balustrade system. Two coats of stain were applied to the new Mahogany railings, along with new coats of Benjamin Moore paint on the deck joists, support columns, and concrete walls along the foundation of the home.

This project contained a lot of visual enhancements, but the structural changes are what the client appreciates most. Being able to fully use both the upper and lower decks adds nearly 900 square feet of outdoor living space to the home. Our team will always educate you on the options you have for your deck, and will focus on ways we can create you a versatile outdoor living space in all seasons.
