Our clients wanted to give their front porch an update to add curb appeal to their beautiful Historic home in Newton. At Tom Curren Companies, we’re familiar with working directly with the Historic District Commission to get any permitting applications necessary. Too often, we hear horror stories of working with contractors who don’t understand the importance of town ordinances. Preserving the original New England look and feel in a house can be challenging, but we have experience working in many local historic homes and are well-versed in the regulations.

This Historic Newton home had an existing front porch spanning the full front of the home, surrounded by what was once pristine looking balusters and lattice. The whole porch looked particularly beat up, bringing down the overall curb appeal of a once beautiful New England home. Our team completely transformed this space, by demolishing  the existing rotting decking structure and concrete steps. We started rebuilding from the column base down, using the existing deck footings with new pressure-treated wood and PVC decking boards and stairs.

Our painters made it a point to match the new deck’s paint colors to that of the original build to maintain the home’s original character. We often color-match on projects to make new construction fit seamlessly into the aesthetic of the rest of the home. Once we were able to successfully land on a similar color, we spot primed and applied two coats of Benjamin Moore paint to give the new deck a crisp finish. With all new paint and carpentry elements on this deck, we were able to highlight the historic charm that had faded over the years.

These clients were ecstatic with the outcome of a new deck that matched seamlessly with the existing look and feel of their home. Now that the wood is not rotting underneath them, our clients found themselves more inclined to sit on the porch and have a cup of coffee in the morning. Tom Curren companies will make your home more beautiful by preserving, yet enhancing, its original character.
