The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home. Not only will you use it on a daily basis, but nearly anyone who’s a guest in your home will see it too. Having a kitchen that you love to be in is so much better than an outdated kitchen that looks like it got stuck in the past. One of the best ways to make a major change to the visual aesthetics in your kitchen is by changing the paint color on your cabinets. If you have good cabinets that just need a modern facelift, fresh paint is exactly what you need! If you’ve painted a wall or two in your time, it may be tempting to DIY this project, but is it really a good choice?

The Process

Painting kitchen cabinets is no quick job. The cabinet doors and drawers will have to be removed, cleaned, and you’ll need to cover exposed areas in the kitchen that you don’t plan to paint. Then, the old paint or stain has to be sanded off the cabinets and a primer will have to be applied. Once the primer is dry, then you can start painting. Don’t underestimate just how much time you’ll need to dedicate to this project that seems simple at first glance.

Necessary Equipment

One of the biggest challenges of painting your own cabinets is the equipment needed and the cost of that equipment. Of course, you can use cheaper equipment, like sandpaper instead of a sanding machine and paint rollers instead of a sprayer, but the end result will reflect those cheap choices. Acquiring the best equipment for the job will come with a steep price tag, and you likely won’t use that equipment again anytime soon!

Is Painting Your Own Kitchen Cabinets a Good Idea?

Now that you have a better understanding of how repainting kitchen cabinets works, you won’t be surprised to hear our recommendation: hire a professional to do the job. This project is too large, costly, and time-consuming to risk sub-par results. By hiring a professional, you’ll know that they have the best equipment to give great results, the knowledge to choose good paint, and the ability to get the job done while you focus on other areas of your busy life.
