Job Stories From Medfield, MA
Deck Rebuild located in Medfield, MA

Our Medfield clients existing decks needed to be rebuilt, as the wood had started to deteriorate.

Our carpenters were able to utilize the previous decks existing structure and dimension, as that support structure remained completely intact. Both the larger back deck and the side entry deck were replaced with pressure treated deck boards and white composite railing.

Pressure-treated wood is a kind of softwood lumber that’s been chemically treated to resist damage from insects, rot, and decay—making it ideal for outdoor use. The white composite railing is resistant to rotting, warping, cracking, swelling and there is no need for regular stain applications or wood preservatives.

A New Deck for a Young Family

As a painting and remodeling contractor in the Boston area, one of the most satisfying experiences is working on projects that you know will thrill the customer.

The McCabe’s deck was one such project. We’d done a bathroom remodel for them a year before, which turned out gorgeous, and we were happy to hear from them again.

Things had changed a bit for the McCabe family in the year since we’d wrapped up their bathroom project. The family had grown from one young child to two energetic sons; the older one now running about and the youngest just walking. The family wanted to redo the deck off the back side of the house. The wood on it had deteriorated and become a splinter hazard, not great for kids and toddlers to run and crawl around on.

After catching up, I took a look at the deck in question and was happy to report to the McCabes that, though the deck surface was shot, the underlying support structure was completely intact. This was good news because a complete rebuild would have cost a lot more. Additionally, since they were happy with the size of the deck, the footprint would stay the same, so there was no need for a building permit application.

As we talked through possible materials and designs, I suggested they might want to redo the front entry deck and landing at the same time. Doing the two projects concurrently would save them some real money compared to doing them as separate projects with set up time for each. They agreed this was a good time to do both.

I put together two estimates for the work on the decks; one using only fabricated composite materials and the second to replace everything with wood. Wood options almost always cost less, since composite materials can be pricey. That said, there is also a difference in maintenance. Wooden decks require periodic staining or waterproofing while composite decks do not.

After discussing these two options, we settled on something in the middle. The composite estimate was a little over the family’s planned budget, but it was important to them to use material that would wear well. We agreed to build the deck using pressure treated yellow pine to keep the cost down and do the railing using composite materials that would look great without requiring future maintenance. The end product was a beautiful, new, outdoor area for the McCabes to play, relax, and enjoy the summer.

To boot, the entire job took less than a week. No muss, no fuss, no splinters!
